Alexandra Village

Been there quite a few times for lunch since its just a 10-15min walk from my work place, but never blogged about the food there. Met alvin for lunch today and i finally tried the avocado juice that melissa was telling me about (although i tried like one sip b4). If the $2 order is too big for you, I think u can opt for a smaller portion. I never knew that cuz i always see ppl drinking from the big cup, which really, imo, is kinda big if you are alr eating a main meal.

So this avocado drink thingy..i think its a filipino dessert drink. from wat i taste, they prob put in condensed milk, milk powder and white sugar. with the flesh/puree of the avocado, of cuz. this is wat i saw on the web, so i shall quote it: "The thickest, creamiest shake you will ever taste. If the thought of drinking avocado scares you, then you don't know what life is all about. Try it and you will see what I mean." It really expresses how I feel, although it does not refer directly to the avocado drink at Alexandra Village (AV). avocado is not scary, really. tastes kinda like chendol, and is as sweet as gula melaka.

Recently, i've been reading up on avocados and started eating more of it. I dun actually buy the fruit though, i usually eat it in sushi. But i must say, i love this fruit a lot. high in fat, but good fats.monosaturated fats that can help you fight cholesterol. but if you are one who is concerned about the number of calories you take in, dun drink this too often. 1 serving has about 480 calories, which is more than a MacD's milkshake or ice cream sundae. it is equivalent to 2 servings (1 cup) of Ben & Jerry's ice cream =) haha..i spend alot of time reading about body, nutrition, health and sports so i'm quite into the whole calories thingy. but dun mind me. anw i think the drink is so high in calories cuz of the condensed milk. although avocado is high in fats and calories, 1 medium sized fruit contains only about 250-300 calories.

The name of the stall that i patronised is mr. avocado exotic juice. the ppl there are v enthusiastic. I got asked if i wanted a drink 3 times in less than 5min. a little irritating, but cant blame them..the whole row of stalls sell avocado juice! imagine the competition. I highly recommend this drink, so do try it..no regrets! ;) just a note: the stall next to mr. avocado is apparently the older one (run by an old man) so it might be better but mr. avocado is definitely the more popular stall, perhaps due to the more enthusiastic staff. maybe i'll try the stall next to it and blog about it soon..

Also tried the char siew rice ($2.50/$3) from roasted duck rice stall next to mr. avocado. supposed to be good cuz it was on tv b4 or sth..but i wanted to try it cuz i saw a boy eating it the other day and the char siew looked really good. so anw, alot of ppl were eating from the stall.. v disappointing.. the char siew is so forgettable. the sauce is too little (i should have asked for a separate bowl of sauce) and the rice is dry. the only good thing is the soup (and i had to ask for it). it consisted of some bitter gourd like veg which is so soft u can just swallow it. and its boiled with pork, so its really tasty. maybe i shld try the roast duck some other time..give the stall another chance. i saw two guys who ordered roast duck, roast pork and char siew..looks good. i think the aesthetic appeal is so much better than the taste. quite sad actually.
alvin had the bak chor mee ($.250) which he says is really good. i tried a little..not too bad.. but common.. can get it elsewhere so there's no need to specially go down. AV market really has soo many stalls..it's worth going down to try some of the food there. yong tau foo, teo chew porridge and claypot laksa (very popular) is not too bad..
